Ok, I'm new to this, but I'll make yet another attempt at a comment which somehow disappeared. This blog is beautifully and articulately written! Katrin's observations about life in France as seen through American eyes are apt and amusing. We couldn't have sent a better ambassador the land of Lafayette and all those Louis. It is obvious that she loves her adopted country but remains nevertheless an ardent American. She pays tribute to what is great about France and its citizens. To any American who has lived in France, her criticisms ring true and I'm sure that most French people would approve of her "esprit critique". Keep those blogs coming, Katrin, and I'll do my do my best to spread the word about your gems of wit and wisdom.

A friend here in Ramona is opening a new hair salon, and she just purchased a shellac-based nail kit for her customers. It's a clear UV-curing resin and a bunch of topcoats.

I haven't tried them but I can tell you they smell better than traditional acrylic glue and paint. They seem to hold up nicely, too, and you dry them with 2 minutes under a little fluorescent light cabinet.

Hey hey hey, america needs its "stuff." you know how much you like to go shopping and since Consumption is the largest piece of the all holy GDP (recall from econ, GDP = consumption + investment + government spending + net exports), we thrive when we shop. Ahem, more like the government thrives off our tax revenues when we shop. Since we are in a trade deficit with China, Japan, Germany...etc, we must CONSUME to continue our existence as americans. Get a permit, but don't buy a car! Too much $ for insurance, maintenance, parking, etc.! Just rent one when needed! I would do this if I lived in the city.

what a drama queen, i'll teach you how to drive a stick shift in like 20 mins. its easy, you just need a way to relate to the material. needless to say, we will begin with ME in the drivers seat and you, ready to learn, in the passenger's seat. all of this in a massive parking lot...away from children and red balloons

Pa thinks you may be over reacting a bit; these guys want EATS and your body is not on their list. However, I too have suffered their bite and what a painful bite--I say get the traps (if France has them!) and drown those suckers in rancid apple juice:) I am still not sure as to their evolutionary status. I would put them just above conservative T-baggers!!!!!!!

sometimes working in the US is not that great...for example when you have to pay $50 union dues a month and the union you are in does absolutely nothing (ahem, anyone out there in UPTE knows this), you start thinking that working in another country would be new and different and better. but, working here has its benefits...for example, reading your sister's blog while getting paid for it is not too shabby...not that i'm at work right now (wink!)

That has made me smile! Thanks for a great post. Volcano whatsitsname caused trouble for friends who's daughter was in India, in a hotel with no AC or pool, with 47 degree heat - at the sum of 90 Euros a night, plus food...
Fortunately ranting at Air France for 4 hours seemed to do the trick and she was only delayed 48 hours rather than the two weeks initially suggested.
Sometimes is good just to be sat in a field in the middle of France!
